Despite announcing their initial squad earlier this month for the Afghanistan series in Sri Lanka, Pakistan introduced a noteworthy addition to the roster on Saturday.

Saud Shakeel, a middle-order batsman, originally selected solely for the Afghanistan clash, has now been formally included in the Asia Cup squad. Shakeel featured in just one match during the series, the final ODI, contributing 9 off 8 balls. This marked his return to ODI cricket since March 2022, and his sixth appearance overall. Simultaneously, Tayyab Tahir, a right-handed batsman yet to make his ODI debut for Pakistan, previously part of the initial 17 for the Asia Cup, has been designated as a traveling reserve. Tahir has thus far played only three international matches for Pakistan in the T20I format.

The revised Pakistan squad boasts formidable names: Babar Azam (c), Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan, Mohammad Haris, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Faheem Ashraf, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Wasim Jnr, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Afridi, Saud Shakeel, and Tayyab Tahir as the traveling reserve.

After their triumphant display against Afghanistan, the Pakistani team will regroup in Multan on Sunday, August 27. Those players who participated in the Lankan Premier League prior to the ODI series will enjoy a day of rest on the following day, rejoining the squad at the Multan Cricket Ground.

According to a press release, “The team management has provided relaxation to the players who participated in the Lankan Premier League. Babar, Imam-ul-Haq and Naseem Shah will travel to Lahore on Sunday and join the side on Monday evening.”

The squad is set to train on Tuesday, August 29, at the Multan Cricket Stadium from 1630 to 1930. Preceding the session, the Pakistan captain is slated to hold a pre-series media conference.

Looking ahead, Pakistan’s journey in the Asia Cup 2023 commences on August 30 with a match against qualifier Nepal. Subsequently, they will head to Sri Lanka to face India on September 2 in their second group stage encounter.
